The Common Core Parental Refusal Act

Dear Friends,

Please sign this petition to show your support for the “Common Core Parents Refusal Act” (A.06025/S.0461).  This bill, if enacted, will codify a parent’s right to refuse the New York State Common Core aligned tests without penalty to the student, his/her teacher, or their school.

School districts must inform parents in writing via email or letter of their rights to refuse these high stakes Common Core tests.  The bill protects school districts from having any state aid withheld if a particular participation rate is not met.  It will also disallow schools from incentivizing students who take the tests (i.e. – ice cream parties for the students who took the tests) and sets-aside alternate study activities for those who refuse the tests so they are not forced to “sit and stare” in the same room as their peers who are taking the tests.

– Assemblyman James Tedisco

The Assembly bill (A.06025) is sponsored by Assemblyman Jim Tedisco and has bi-partisan support from 37 co-sponsors including Assemblyman Al Graf and Assemblyman Ed Ra.  There is a companion bill (S.04161) in the New York State Senate sponsored by Senator Terrence Murphy and has six co-sponsors so far.

By signing this petition, you declare your support for a parent’s right to choose what is best for their children.  Let’s take back local control of our schools and bring common sense to our education policies.
